I had been dreaming about visiting Jeju Island for years, seeing it on screen via K-dramas such as ‘Welcome to Samdal-ri’ and ‘When Life Gives You Tangerines’. Last year, I finally stepped onto its windswept shores and found a treasure trove of hidden gems and iconic sights. Quick Jeju Travel Tips
Before we dig in to all the beautiful must-visit locations in Jeju Island, here are some essential things to know for your trip planning:
- Getting In: Fly directly! I’ve personally flown in and it’s quick and efficient. (Direct flights from Hong Kong to Jeju take only about 3 hours on average, which is fantastic.). Most mainland airports also offer flights around an hour. Boats are an option from Mokpo, but it’s a much longer journey (4 hours) and can trigger seasickness.
- When to Visit: May and September are the shoulder seasons – I visited end of September and was there just in time for the stunning autumn pink muly flowers and silvergrass! The weather is not too hot or cold then either. Late March is your best bet for cherry blossoms. If you want to try the famous Hallabong oranges, March is peak harvest time!
- Where to Stay: My easy answer? Split your stay between Seogwipo and Jeju City to cover attractions on both sides more easily and shorten total travel times. If you’re picking just one, Seogwipo is more “local” and charming than Jeju City and close to a ton of attractions. I personally booked this stay in Jeju City and absolutely loved The Bay Jeju Resort in Seogwipo.
- Stay in Touch: Korea has eSIMs, which are super convenient! But for my Hong Kong iPhone users, many HK iPhones don’t accept eSIMs. Don’t worry, I personally used a physical SIM card booked on Klook and picked it up from the Hong Kong airport before flying – quick and easy!
- Where to Book Activities: I always check Klook or Get Your Guide for the best deals on tours and experiences.
- Getting Around: Rent a car! It gives you so much freedom to roam about. Regardless, download the Kakao T app for taxis and KakaoMap for navigation – they’re essential!

And the best part? It’s conveniently located just a ten-minute drive from the airport, making it an easy stop on your journey.

Cheonjiyeon Waterfall, meaning “The God’s Pond”, derives its name from the legend of seven nymphs who are said to descend from a cloud bridge at midnight to play on the ground before returning to the sky. The 22-metre waterfall flowing through a lush green rainforest is a breathtaking sight. Along the short and pleasant trail, you can spot beautiful birds, ducks, and koi fish. Near the entrance, you’ll also find several shops filled with trinkets, snacks, and drinks.

The Secret Forest is a natural forest path that was once a hidden gem but gained fame due to its popularity on social media. Picture a charming turquoise caravan nestled among towering trees. It looks like straight out of a k-drama scene (you may recognize it from “Welcome to Samdal-ri”). The forest path is dotted with Instagram-worthy spots, featuring adorable ponies and playful goats amidst vibrant flowers and lush greenery. Its unique charm sets it apart from other popular forests on Jeju Island, such as Bijarim Forest, making it a favored spot for family photos, wedding shoots, and more. This enchanting location is a must-visit while in Jeju! It boasts a diverse landscape, including rare cypress forests, expansive grasslands, and quaint stone walls and log cabins.

Seongsan Ilchulbong
Seongsan Ilchulbong is a stunning crater formed by volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago, offering picturesque views along the entire hiking trail. It’s a short and fairly easy hike, suitable for all ages. The area opens as early as 4:30 AM for those eager to catch the magical sunrise at the summit. Known as “Sunrise Peak,” it’s truly a sight to behold! After your hike, head down to the beach below, where you can watch Jeju’s legendary Hanyeo (female free divers of Jeju) in action. You can also try their fresh catches, such as abalones, at their seafood restaurant! Unfortunately, the performance was canceled during my visit, but this gives me another reason to return to Jeju for both the sunrise and the memorable Hanyeo experience!

Saebyeol Oreum is an oreum (small extinct volcano) on Jeju Island. While there are many such formations across the island, Saebyeol Oreum stands out for its convenient access and its breathtaking display of silvergrass during the fall. The oreum offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, but what truly sets it apart is its reputation for hosting some of the most breathtaking sunsets, with the shimmering silvergrass in the foreground. I highly recommend planning your visit in the fall to fully experience this natural beauty at its peak!

Soesokkak Estuary is a valley formed where fresh water meets seawater, creating deep pools that create a serene and mystical atmosphere. The blend of deep blue waters, volcanic rock formations, and dense pine forests makes it a truly unique destination.
Visitors can delve deep into the estuary by riding a traditional flat wooden boat called a “Teu”. It has been used for centuries to ferry people across the waters. You can also choose to kayak through the beautiful valley yourself.
The walking trails surrounding the estuary are part of the Olle Trail, leading to Hahyo Soesokkak Haebyeon Beach, renowned for its striking black sand. I believe this spot is a must-visit nature gem, perfect for those seeking natural beauty and tranquility.

Aqua Planet Jeju
Aqua Planet Jeju is home to one of the largest aquarium facilities in the world, showcasing a breathtaking ecosystem of marine life. It is a highly recommended family-friendly attraction, offering an up-close look at a diverse array of sea creatures.
One of the highlights is the opportunity to learn about the traditional diving techniques and equipment used by Jeju’s renowned haenyeo (female free divers). You can also see and touch various sea creatures commonly caught by haenyeo, such as starfish, conches, and abalones, up close.
Additionally, you have the chance to experience swimming alongside a vibrant diversity of marine organisms right before your eyes. It’s an unforgettable adventure that combines education, fun, and a deep appreciation for ocean life!

Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff is a volcanic rock formation at the southern coast of Jeju Island. Its hexagonal staircase-like form resembles a Game of Thrones location. The precision of these formations is so remarkable that they seem carved intentionally by human hands. However, they are entirely the result of nature’s artistry. The crashing of waves and the endless sea make this spot so peaceful and relaxing.

Gamttanam Cafe is the cutest tangerine Cafe in Jeju. Once you’ve seen the iconic entrance, you know you’re in for a treat. Every corner of this charming café is a feast for the eyes and perfect for your Instagram feed! The beautiful decor creates a super cozy atmosphere indoors. Outside, you’ll find a delightful garden, ideal for a picnic, surrounded by the vibrant tangerine trees that make Jeju so special.
At Gamttanam, the menu is inspired by the famous Hallabong tangerines that are native to Jeju. I had the pleasure of trying Hallabong Shaved Ice, Fresh Juice, and Hallabong Pound Cake (my favorite!), each bursting with flavor.

Socheonji (소천지), which translates to “small cheonji,” gets its name from its resemblance to the Heaven Lake of Baekdusan Mountain. The area is not only visually stunning but also rich in natural beauty, perfect for nature strolls and photography.

Cafe Saebil is a former resort building transformed into a delightful bakery and cafe since its opening in November 2018. This charming spot has quickly gained popularity, attracting not only hikers heading up Saebyeol Oreum nearby but also visitors drawn in by its breathtaking panoramic views.
The cafe features a spacious, modern design with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The cafe’s elevated position provides sweeping views of the surrounding Jeju landscape, including Saebyeol Oreum and its silver grass. Furthermore, you may also witness the enchanting pink muhly grass, which blooms in vibrant shades from late September to November, making it a rare and magical sight.

Hamdeok Beach
Located along Jeju Olle Trail Course 19, Hamdeok Beach is undoubtedly one of the best beaches on Jeju Island. In addition to its stunning coastline, Hamdeok Beach features a lovely grassy field, perfect for picnics and relaxation. The adjacent coastal walking trail invites visitors to stroll and take in the natural beauty of the area. From the beach, Seoubong Volcanic Cone can be seen. It is such a breathtaking view, especially in spring when it is covered in vibrant yellow canola blossoms.
