Changthong Heritage Park

Imagine stepping into a living museum of nature! Changthong Heritage Park is more than just a botanical garden. It’s a sanctuary filled with an incredible collection of rare and ancient tree species, gathered from all corners of Thailand. For someone like me, coming from a city like Hong Kong, I was absolutely in awe of the sheer variety and uniqueness of trees I’d never encountered before! Every corner was picture-perfect. It’s a peaceful escape where you can wander through meticulously cared-for landscapes, breathe in fresh air, and feel a deep connection to nature. 

One of my favorite spots was a large lake surrounded by palm trees, but these weren’t just any palms! Their trunks were wonderfully loopy and twisted into all sorts of unique shapes, very different from the straight ones you usually see.

The park also boasts a cafe with a tranquil waterfall view, which I imagine is super relaxing in warmer weather. However, when I visited in January, the weather was absolutely perfect, so I much preferred to enjoy my time outdoors, soaking in the sound of nature and the wonderfully fresh air. Perfect for a calming stroll or a moment of reflection!

Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM (Last entry at 6:00 PM). Cafe typically 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM. Spending 2-3 hours here would be enough.
Admission Fee: 150 THB for thai residents, 250 THB for non-residents (as of Jan 2026)
Traveler’s Tip: As this location is a bit out from the center of Chiang Mai and not yet super well-known, finding a Grab back can be tricky. I personally had to wait about 30 minutes for a ride, so my top tip is to try to communicate with the Grab driver who takes you there to see if they’d be willing to wait for you, or arrange a pick-up time. 

Dantewada

Prepare to have your breath taken away! Dantewada isn’t just a café; it’s an immersive experience. Picture this: stunning waterfalls cascading around you, vibrant, colorful flowers blooming everywhere, and hidden caves waiting to be explored. Sip on a delicious coffee amidst this natural wonderland, and you’ll understand why this spot is pure magic. Even though much of the setting is artificial, it still felt stunning. And let me tell you, the café food was surprisingly delicious! We went for a classic Pad Thai and a creamy Carbonara, and I’d rate both highly. It’s an Instagrammer’s paradise and a nature lover’s dream all rolled into one!

Traveler’s Tip: If you’re hoping to capture those perfect, crowd-free shots, I recommend going 2-3 hours before closing. This helps you avoid the peak-hour rush and gives you a much better chance at shorter queues for photos!

Ying Yong Flower Garden

If you adore flowers, then Ying Yong Flower Garden is a non-negotiable stop! This vibrant garden is an explosion of color and fragrance, showcasing an astounding variety of beautiful flowers and plants. Set against breathtaking mountains, the seasonal blooms pop beautifully against the deep blue sky.  For the most spectacular displays, visit Ying Yong Flower Garden during the cool, dry season from November to February. This is when a vibrant array of flowers, such as lavender and cosmos are in peak bloom. While the garden is open year-round with seasonal flowers, this peak window promises the most memorable experience. If you’re in Chiang Mai, don’t miss it!

Traveler’s Tip: Ying Yong Flower Garden is a bit out of the city in the mountains. I highly recommend either booking a driver and combining it with other nearby spots or driving yourself. If you’re driving, you can park at Ban Nong Hoi Mai Child Center for 50฿, which includes a ride up to the garden gate in a small truck or Songthaew. The road up is pretty steep, so you have the option to park below and hike the 500m up, or take the convenient 50-baht truck ride to the entrance, which is an experience in itself!

Baan Kang Wat

Step into a bohemian dream at Baan Kang Wat, a charming art village nestled away from the main tourist hubs. This unique community is a hub for local artists and creatives, featuring quirky shops, artisan workshops, and cozy cafes. It’s the perfect place to find unique handcrafted souvenirs, enjoy a slow afternoon, and soak in the laid-back, artistic atmosphere.
Each corner was eye-catching and made you want to stop and look. I honestly found this to be the best place for souvenir shopping in Chiang Mai, with such unique items crafted by different artists. As someone who collects a postcard from each trip, this is where I finally found ‘the one’. I couldn’t find better designs elsewhere, comparatively.
And while you’re there, don’t miss out on lunch! There’s also a fantastic Khao Soi restaurant within where you can stop for a delicious bowl of Chiang Mai’s most famous dish!

Mae Kampong Village

For an authentic taste of rural Thai life and breathtaking natural beauty, head to Mae Kampong Village. This quaint, picturesque village is famous for its stunning mountain views, refreshing waterfalls, and charming wooden homestays. It’s an ideal escape from the city heat, a chance to reconnect with nature, enjoy local hospitality, and experience the simpler, beautiful rhythm of life. Don’t miss the chance to try their local coffee!

This village truly gave me that perfect “cabin in the woods” vibe. Surrounded by beautiful wooden houses that feel so cozy and serene. It boasts a lovely café with incredible views overlooking the entire village, which was the perfect spot to relax. And if you love waterfalls, you’re in for a treat. There’s a breathtaking waterfall in the village that adds to the incredibly relaxing atmosphere.

Opening Hours: As a living village, it’s generally accessible all day. Individual shops, cafes, and attractions typically operate from morning until evening (e.g., 8:30 AM – 9:00 PM for some businesses).

Traveler’s Tip: To truly experience the tranquil atmosphere, consider arriving earlier in the morning before it gets too busy. You can grab breakfast, explore the village, visit the waterfall, and enjoy a coffee at one of its charming cafes. Many people also opt for an overnight homestay to fully immerse themselves in the village life. Furthermore, as it is out of the city, I highly recommend either booking a driver and combining it with other nearby spots or driving yourself, as you may not find Grab to or from this village.

Mon Jam

Elevate your Chiang Mai experience (literally!) with a trip to Mon Jam. This picturesque hilltop offers panoramic, stunning views that stretch for miles, especially at sunrise or sunset. You’ll find breathtaking cafes clinging to the mountainside and sprawling flower fields that look like something out of a fairy tale. It’s cool, refreshing, and absolutely unforgettable – perfect for a romantic outing or an inspiring solo adventure.
One of my absolute favorite Chiang Mai cafes, YODDOI Coffee on Mon Jam, boasts incredibly breathtaking views! It’s truly special to sip on your drink while overlooking a vibrant flower garden and the expansive mountain valley. Beyond the stunning scenery, Mon Jam offers a unique thrill with “Formula Hmong,” where you can experience riding traditional wooden carts, a fun and authentic nod to traditional Hmong mountain transport!

Traveler’s Tip: The best time to visit for clear views and pleasant weather is during the cool, dry season (November to February). Weekdays might be less crowded than weekends. If you’re planning to ride the wooden carts, check local availability and conditions upon arrival.

Maekee Sheep House

Calling all animal lovers! Maekee Sheep House offers a heartwarming escape to the countryside. This charming farm allows you to interact with adorable sheep, feed them, and simply enjoy their gentle presence. 
In addition to the sheep, you’ll discover other sweet residents like rabbits and various birds, adding to the farm’s charm. Beyond the cute critters, you’ll also be treated to scenic views of the surrounding landscapes, making it a fun and relaxing outing for families and anyone looking for a dose of wholesome joy.

Location: Mae Rim area, Chiang Mai (often combined with visits to Mon Jam or other Mae Rim attractions) 
Opening Hours: Daily, 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Entrance Fee: 100 THB per person
Traveler’s Tip: For the least number of crowds, consider visiting in the morning. You can purchase food on-site to feed the sheep and other animals, making for some memorable interactions!

One Nimman

For a taste of modern Chiang Mai chic, head to One Nimman. This trendy neighborhood is a vibrant hub filled with stylish boutique shops, bustling cafes, and eye-catching art installations. It’s the perfect place to shop for unique fashion, enjoy a gourmet meal, grab a craft coffee, and immerse yourself in the city’s contemporary art scene. Explore, people-watch, and soak in the cool vibes!

What struck me most about One Nimman was its uncanny resemblance to European markets. Suddenly, I felt like I was transported to Europe or the UK rather than Chiang Mai! It was brimming with unique and beautiful souvenirs, making it a fantastic spot to find special keepsakes. Plus, the nearby Nimmanhaemin Road is dotted with an array of cozy cafes, perfect for a leisurely break.

Traveler’s Tip: One Nimman is great for an afternoon of browsing, shopping, and grabbing a meal. After exploring, take a stroll down Nimmanhaemin Road to discover its many charming independent cafes and boutiques.

Coconut Market

Coconut Market is a lively local market offering fresh coconuts and other tasty Thai snacks. This is actually a fantastic spot to relax and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. You’ll often hear live music playing, adding to the cheerful vibe. And you can also browse and shop for unique clothing and local souvenirs from various stalls.
And here’s a heartwarming bonus: there’s an area with adorable small goats that you can play with and even feed! It’s a wonderful, unexpected touch that makes this market even more memorable.

Opening Hours: This is primarily a weekend market, open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Traveler’s Tip: Since it’s a weekend-only market, plan your visit accordingly! Come early to beat the heat and crowds. Allow yourself time to wander, enjoy the music, browse the unique stalls, and of course, say hello to the goats! It’s a delightful way to spend a few hours on a weekend morning.

Fleur Cafe & Eatery

If you’re looking for a charming spot to refuel and indulge your senses, Fleur Cafe & Eatery is your go-to. Known for its delightful menu, from delectable pastries to savory dishes, this café is also a visual treat with its beautiful floral decor. It’s a lovely place for an afternoon tea or to enjoy the aesthetically pleasing ambiance while planning your next Chiang Mai adventure.
The cafe is adorned with beautiful flowers. It even has a serene koi fish pond, creating such a relaxing atmosphere that makes you want to linger.
However, while the ambiance is fantastic, I found the food options somewhat limited, especially if you’re vegetarian or vegan. It’s a place to savor the views and the drinks, perhaps less so for a full meal with specific dietary needs.

Traveler’s Tip: Come here for the tranquil ambiance and beautiful photo opportunities amidst the flowers and pond. If you have specific dietary requirements, it might be best to grab a snack or drink here and plan your main meal elsewhere.
